Poems for your Mood
written by Kailey brennan
Poetry can make us feel emotions the way no other genre can. Poems connect us to each other and the world around us, taking us on a journey, line by line.
Sometimes it feels as if a poet has written the words exclusively for us, an that personal connection is what keeps us coming back to certain poems in moments of heartbreak, sorrow, joy or confusion. Whatever mood you may find yourself in, there is a poem for that.
Here are a few examples of poems for your mood, that might express how you are feeling today:
If you are feeling disheartened—
Once when I was running,
from all that haunted me;
to the dark i was succumbing-
to what hurt unbearably
Searching for the one thing,
that would set my sad soul free.
In time I stumbled upon it,
an inner calm and peace;
and now i am beginning,
to see and believe
in who i am becoming-
and all i’ve yet to be.
If you are feeling alone—
The beautiful thing
about being human
is there are always
others who feel the
same as you.
If you are feeling powerless—
“Do not spend time wondering if you are the type of woman men will hurt
If he leaves you with a car alarm heart, you learn to sing along
It is hard to stop loving the ocean
Even after it has left you gasping, salty
So forgive yourself for the decisions you’ve made
The ones you still call mistakes when you tuck them in at night
And know this:
Know that you are the type of woman who is searching for a place to call yours
Let the statues crumble
You have always been the place
You are the kind of woman who can build it yourself
You were born to build”
If you are feeling nostalgic—
I once knew a magic
and I would find it in everything.
Or perhaps, dwelling within me
I didn’t need to find it - or even look;
how easy it was to dream without sleeping
and shine brilliant excitement
thinking about infinite potential.
At some point, something happened-
not inescapably bad,
(although I am no stranger to the night)
but along the way I lost the power of my imagination,
preoccupied in the madness for just a second,
I forgot it amongst my selfish pursuits,
only to realize what is missing too late,
and now, must spend the remaining days,
hoping to recapture what I never noticed I lost.
If you are feeling broken hearted—
I used to think that love is a poem I write you to the beat of my heart when I receive a text from you
I used to think that love births from inside of me when you touch me with your wet fingers so gently
I used to think that love is yelling at you, and then begging you to forgive me, then you forgiving me
I used to think that love begins with a story of a Jewish and an Arab coming together, experiencing more similarities with their dishes and curls than differences with their countries and politics
I used to think that love is you coming back to me after months of silence, to go down on your knees and thank me for taking you in when you were broken and proud
I used to…
Now I know that love is forgetting you, love is not wanting you back, love is falling in love again, love is allowing me to feel angry with you, despair about you, hope about us, and then wisdom that it wasn’t you, it will never be you
You can leave me. You can tell me you never loved me. You can give me silence and coldness, my enemies, for brunch and dessert. But you can never stop me from loving you. and moving on.
If you are feeling self-reflective—
when you grow rapidly
and experience such
that you can no longer
look at yourself or
the world the same way
the time and space
to settle into the new you
If you are feeling wild—
Our ancestors in the earth are not
Ashamed of us. The strong smell
Of dirt, the delirious rabbits, the
Clocks are all disappearing. A
Prehistoric gift acquires the smell
Of salt. I grasp onto winter’s tail.
Some water plants are lying around.
Smell & taste, I have had good
Luck in love. The slippery roads,
The capricious numbers on a blazing
Road, meet me at the forest’s edge
Where we can go with our legs
Lopped off, strangers to the clean
Teeth and tongue of outward happiness.
